We Brits love our winter warmers! Winter beers are typically dark, malty, sweet and strong. While enjoying a few winter warmers at your local British pub, you might want to take note that these seasonal beers are higher in alcohol percentage than their lighter counterparts.

American Christmas beers are good too. These differ from English seasonal beers as they are typically flavored with spices associated with baked treats like cookies.

Here are five beers that you should give a try this month:

Imaging Abbey Ale: This is a chocolaty-chestnut brown beer that has the essence of raisin, fig, date, and other dried fruits. It is bitter, almost a semi-dry beer. This is absolutely a repeat-order flavor of beer.

North Coast Brewing Company PranQster: PranQster is brewed with a mixed variety of antique yeast strains. This produces a full-body fruity flavor with a floral nose. It has a smooth, clean finish.

Widmer Brother Brewing Company Pitch Black IPA: This beer, which isn’t available until January, has a very nice floral aroma. It also has a flavor of a nutty roasted malt, and is a smooth ale.

Founders Backwoods Bastard: You can expect to experience lovely, warm smells of a single malt scotch, or an oaky bourbon barrels, smokey sweet caramel and roasted malts. This also has a hint of earthy spice, and a touch of dark fruit. It is a sipper beer.

21st Amendment Fireside Chat: This is a winter spice beer that is available from October through December each years. It is brewed as a classic, strong ale with subtle hint of hand-selected spices. It is just right for the festive time of year.

After a recent pub poll, these holiday beers were rated “must- haves” this season. You’ll love them, they’ll add some conviviality to the party and they make great presents too.

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale

This India pale ale is not for everyone but it is a delight for the connoisseur who loves a “hoppy” ale. In fact, Celebration Ale’s taste is all about the bite. The initial taste is distinctively earthy taste with a decidedly bitter finish.

Schlafly Christmas Ale

If Santa brewed his own beer, it would probably taste like this full-bodied amber ale. Made with a variety of spices including orange peel and cloves, you will be hard pressed to find another beer like it. Schlafly Christmas Ale is only available around the holidays so be sure to try it soon.

Scaldis Noel

At the opposite end of the spectrum from Celebration Ale is this Belgian winter warmer beer. Scalsis Noel (or Bush Noel for you purists) is loaded with the rich taste of malt. The brewer adds complexity to the taste by introducing the flowers of the hops and aging the mixture for a month or more. The result is unique in the beer world.

There’s more than Bottles Out There

One small bit of advice. While there are thousands of beers that come in a bottle, there are plenty that you can only get at your local brewery. Be sure to get out and taste some of those truly marvelous brews at one of the great British pubs in Orlando. If you’re lucky, you’ll find more than just beer there. Cheers!
